Hailed as one of the best chippies in Northampton, we thought we'd put Nick's Plaice up to the test to see just how well it stacks up against its positive reviews.
Ranked highly on Tripadvisor with a 4.5 out of 5 rating overall, we were expecting good things from the minute we entered the store.
When you first walk into Nick's Plaice, you'll first be struck by their neon lights that line the interior of the shop, along with their funky signage and frames on the walls
Its interior separates the store from other outlets in the town, and with its unique look it doesn't take on the usual copy-and-paste style many fish and chip shops house.
Served quickly and politely by a member of staff, we were able to order off a broad and well-price menu comprising of battered fish, a range of sausages, fishcakes, a selection of pies, as well as a range of accompaniments like mushy peas and curry sauce.
Faced with a lot to choose from, we ordered a range of items that we thought would give us a well-rounded experience of what Nick's Plaice had to offer.
First off, the chips were cooked well with a crispy exterior and fluffy middle, a pleasant surprise. Priced at £2.60 for a small, the size of the portion was fair considering the quality of the product.
Although it was disappointing that while we we took up the offer of salt and vinegar in chip shop tradition, the amount applied by the staff was measly and left barely a taste of either condiment on the chips.
Unlike a lot of fish and chip stores, the fishcake did not have the dreaded grey, flavourless interior. Priced at a reasonable £1.70, the fishcake was very palatable, well-flavoured and it was clear a good amount of seasoning was used in the making of the product.
The cod offered up crispy batter and a flaky, tender fillet of fish, and appeared to be a great value offering by the store.
It was unfortunate that we were met with wet and oily batter on the underside of the fillet, to the point where the batter looked undercooked, resulting in an unpleasant texture that let the otherwise enjoyable serving down.
Whilst renowned for being a British staple, the battered sausage left more to be desired. The sausage itself had a good flavour but was let down by the dry and spongy texture, as well as the over-oily batter which surrounded it.
The friendly staff and retro interior separate Nick's Plaice from its competitors, guaranteeing customers a positive first impression and affordable prices. But the food served was lack-lustre when compared to its high rating and plethora of positive reviews online, resulting in the takeaway store leaving us underwhelmed with their offerings.
Overall, Nick's Plaice scores 6/10.
