Angelic voices honouring Dame Ethel Smyth stuns church goers at iconic concert

The Northampton Bach Choir sing in the name of feminism

St Matthew’s Church hosted a Mass like no other. Featuring the violin accomplice of Helena Thomas, singers Rebecca Bottone, Rhiain Taylor, Stephen Mills and Adam Marsden entertained church goers and other guests. Laura Bailie conducted.

Ethel Smyth is a notable 20th century suffragette, who was not only renounced as an original voice, but also found talent in conducting and composing. Her masculine style and tone were revolutionary for the time. One of her most famous pieces was “The March of the Women”, celebrating women getting the right to vote.

Singing her art was a beautiful way of honouring her impact on women and music.
