Kingsley's spring clean now well under way

The team at The Kingsley Courier took part in Kingsley's very own Great British Spring Clean on March 20.

The Great British Spring Clean (GBSC), an initiative set-up by the charity Keep Britain Tidy, aims to protect the environment, eliminate litter, and improve public areas.

The movement started on March 17 and will run until April 2, with another community litter pick taking place from Heathers Café on Kingsley Park Avenue, Kingsley, on March 27.

Whilst out litter picking, we were able to experience first hand the scale of the fly-tipping and littering problem in Kingsley, one of the issues that continues to frustrate local residents.

Throughout the afternoon we gathered hundreds of pieces of litter left on the streets including various items ranging from disposable e-cigarette vapes and food wrappers, to nitrous oxide (NOS) canisters and used condoms.

In addition, there were numerous sightings of smashed glass on the pavement, creating a dangerous hazard for pedestrians and animals.

It is through the awareness raised and the action taken by local volunteers taking part in the GBSC that will remove unattractive and potentially dangerous litter from Kingsley.

West Northamptonshire Council (WNC) is looking to encourage residents in Kingsley and across the county to take part in the GBSC, providing litter pickers, sacks and bag hoops to borrow from the council.

Councillor Phil Larratt, WNC Cabinet member for Environment, Transport, Highways and Waste, said: "Littering is an unacceptable and illegal activity. While many people are responsible and take their waste home or dispose of it in a bin, there are a small percentage of people who carelessly and thoughtlessly discard of litter".

"The spring clean provides an opportunity for communities to come together, and support volunteers and our street cleansing crews to help keep their local area clean and tidy".
