Looking for a running group with a difference? Look no further than Run Talk Run

Run Talk Run (RTR) is a global initiative founded in October 2017 which amalgamates mental health support with a running group.

The premise of RTR is a free and non-competitive 5km run each week for people of all abilities, and offers a place where peers can support those experiencing mental ill-health, loneliness or those who find it hard to commit to regular exercise.

The initiative has subsequently been praised by hundreds of participants for creating a safe space that helps with their anxiety and low mood, with one runner saying: “Getting human interaction with like-minded people outside whilst moving every week makes me feel more connected, happier and more fulfilled.”

Another said: “It’s been awesome to have a regular group of lonely people to run and chat with. It definitely helped me through a super-difficuilt time."

Correspondingly, a survey conducted by the organisation in August 2022 revealed that over 97.7% of runners believed that taking part in RTR had improved their mental wellbeing, an increase of over 10% from the previous year.

The Racecourse is home to Northampton's Run Talk Run group

Founder Jess Robinson, who had been battling with her own mental ill-health whilst launching Run Talk Run, has explained her motivations for setting up the initiative: "There are two things that propelled me out of my depression, anxiety and bulimia. The first was running, the second was community. I would like to see more ‘beginner runners’ discovering how truly powerful the running community can be to aid in recovery."

Run Talk Run Northampton can be found at The Racecourse every Thursday from 18:50.
